A beauty having a smoke

This is an informal portrait of a Japanese woman smoking the Edo pipe after washing her hair which is painted on a silk scroll in the Kansei era (1789 - 1801) by Utagawa Toyokuni. Image scanned from Jackie Menzies and Edmund Capons' Japan: Masterpieces from the Idemitsu Collection, 1982, page 66. There is also respectful acknowledgment for the Curatorial staff of the Idemitsu Museum of Arts.
